The George Lake Story
George Lake is home to an amazing transformation.

For decades, the area was used as an unofficial dumping ground by area industry. Slag piled high and the land was declared a brownfield by federal officials.

Through the efforts of local environmentalists and the City of Hammond, the area was reclaimed and restored. A world-class golf course was developed. A nature trail and fishing pier were installed. Dormant wetlands sprang back to life.

Today, ‘birdies’ and birds harmoniously co-exist in a natural area that has been recognized by the World Earth Summit, the State of Indiana, golfers (including the LPGA), naturalists and residents who enjoy the serene landscape and dramatic transformation that brought George Lake back to life.
